Keepers at Kensico

It was a record breaking day at Kensico Reservoir with my brother. I was so carried away with all of the fish catching going on that I forgot to take photos on my digital camera, so these are from my phone. We started the day with a pretty fast yellow perch catch. My brother was ecstatic to hear that we could take it home to eat. It was full of roe, which my brother is also excited to eat. He has already seasoned it with salt. The perch also had a crawdad in its stomach, still basically fully in tact.

Then, he caught a big lake trout, just barely at the 18 inch minimum limit for keeping. I think this fish had just spawned, as it had a few large, loose eggs inside of it. Already my ice box was seeing more action than it has ever seen before, and it was almost out of space. My brother was catching tiny snails and even reeled in a crawdad that somehow got snagged in a clump of shells that caught the hook. A few minutes later I caught a lake trout too, just barely 18 inches too. At this point the ice box had more fish than ice in it, so I threw a few bass lures for fun and then we drove home.

That's certainly the best day of fishing I've ever had at Kensico Reservoir, and probably the best I've ever had up north in general — at least in terms of size. It doesn't take much to break my records these days, especially at Kensico. It may have been the first place I ever caught a bass, but it certainly doesn't offer much or very often. Another group of anglers told us they had caught nothing that day. But walking back to the car they told me they were headed back out to the water to try again.
